I had the privilege of meeting and photographing Craig in March 2022, both inside and beyond the boundaries of Amboseli National Park. Those encounters were unforgettable. Craig moved with quiet authority through the landscape, seemingly untroubled by human presence, yet deeply aware of his surroundings. To stand near him was to feel the weight of decades — of migration routes remembered, of seasons endured, of threats survived.

Photographing Craig was not about capturing a trophy image, but about documenting character. His worn skin, his majestic tusks, his steady gaze all told a story of coexistence and survival in an increasingly fragile world. Each photograph from those days is a testament to his individuality and to the extraordinary life he lived.

Craig passed away on 3 January 2026. His death marks the loss of one of the last great tuskers of Amboseli and a profound moment for elephant conservation. Yet his legacy endures — in the memories of those who observed him, in the images that preserve his presence, and in the responsibility we share to protect what remains.
