The photographer
About Gabriel Haering
Born in 1961 in Basel, Gabriel Haering grew up in Italy and has been living in Giubiasco since 2001. An amateur photographer, Haering dreams of dedicating himself fully to his passion once he retires.
Early Beginnings
Haering’s love for photography began at the age of 10. At 14, he bought his first SLR camera with his savings. By 20, he had turned his mother’s laundry room into a darkroom for developing black-and-white photos, much to her dismay due to the acid splashes.
Academic and Professional Journey
He pursued his studies at ETH Zurich, earning a Ph.D. in chemistry. Throughout his numerous business and leisure trips, his camera was always by his side. In 1993, he and his wife discovered the parks of Africa, sparking a love that has drawn him back whenever possible.
Transition to Digital and Continuous Learning
In 2004, Haering transitioned to his first digital Nikon camera and has remained loyal to the brand, recently upgrading to a mirrorless model. He has taken several courses with specialist photographers, including night photography in Norway to capture the Northern Lights and nature photography in Zimbabwe. His inspiration for black-and-white photography comes from Nick Brandt.
He joined the Bellinzona non-professional photographer association Fotoclub Turrita in 2020 in order to meet other passionate, exchange experiences and learn more from others. He is taking care of the marketing activities, website being part of the committee.
Professional Ventures
In 2022, Haering founded a tour operator company specialized in bespoke safaris in Tanzania, in partnership with a local friend he met in 2016 (Endelevu Tours and Safaris). This venture provides him with an excuse to return to Tanzania at least once every two years. He organises 1-2 photographic safari in Tanzania every year(click here to learn more about).
